Video Blues

One of the suggestions of many indie authors is to have a book trailer. I’ve been planning on doing this for some time. It had been pretty low on the list of priorities, mostly because I didn’t want to be bothered with setting up a camera and audio.

I have a great microphone. It costs $600.00, but hasn’t worked since I moved to Iowa from Maryland. This is a source of great frustration for me. Not wanting to spend another day battling with drivers and such, I decided to just go get a new camera and Logitech mic.

I set them up and did the test that happens during install. The video and audio worked just fine.  That was the last bit of good news.

My next step was to try to do a simple recording, just to get a feel for it.  The software has a record tab, so I click on it and there are a number of appealing options, start video after 3 second delay, length of record, and others.  There is even a motion detector, which will cause the camera to try to follow me around.  Seems fun right?

Well not exactly.  You know what it doesn’t include?  A start recording button or a stop recording button!  Are you kidding me?  It seems to want to record, at random and is very disinterested in me having any say in the matter. I am so mad I can spit. I’m also hungry. Furthermore, this has distracted me from watching the All-Star Game.

Yesterday I read a blog post about Vlogging, at Waxing Unlyrical, and I left a comment about speaking well and avoiding ‘uhms’ and ‘you knows’ in videos.  This is a pet peeve of mine.  It was this post, which was really well done that got me moving on finally getting the camera. In fact, I like my camera, but I don’t know how to use it yet.  The instructions seem to tell me almost nothing.

There was one HUGE negative to buying a camera, which nobody mentioned. When I got home and looked at the area surrounding my computer, I realized I would need to put a serious clean on the place.  This was a multi-hour ordeal. It didn’t kill me though, so I am not going to complain.

I really wanted to show you a 1st video and then do a little dance (off camera), but I still have some learning to do.  So, that is all for tonight.  Tomorrow’s post will be rather late, as I don’t get off until 8:30, but I will get something up.  J
